Favorite First Dance Songs of 2016

first dance song

If you haven’t picked up on the fact that I love music possibly more than I love photography… then hi, I’m Nikki and I love music! I’m constantly listening, singing, and dancing to all types of music. A warning I give to my wedding couples is that during the wedding reception, it’ll look like I’m talking to myself, but I’m just singing along to the tunes! I always keep track of the first dance songs and sometimes get really excited about what songs the couple chooses.

Here are a few of my favorite first dance songs I’ve heard this year!

1. Only Love, Ben Howard

“Darling you’re with me, always around me.
Only love, only love.”

So I’m super biased because I’m obsessed with Ben Howard. Everything he does is gold. And Only Love is possibly my favorite song by him (it’s really hard to choose his music is amazing). Anyways, at this particular wedding, I was inside photographing details while the band was setting things up, testing speakers, etc. They play the beginning 5 seconds of this song four times, and every time I’m thinking… BEN HOWARDDDD. By the 4th time, I put it together that this has to be their first dance song and I’m thinking to myself, how could this wedding get any betterrrrr… I get to photograph a beautiful couple dancing for the first time to my favorite song.

2. Northern Wind, City & Colour

You’re the lullaby
That’s singing me to sleep
You are the other half
You’re like a missing piece

This is another bias of my mine. I love City & Colour. The man’s voice is so beautiful and this song is romance to a T. This is by far my favorite song of all of the music that City & Colour has put out. When the couple started dancing to this, I teared up a little bit because just omg it’s perfect and sentimental and beautiful and a fave of mine.

3. Your Song, Elton John

I hope you don’t mind that I put down in words
How wonderful life is while you’re in the world

I’m going to stop saying this is a bias because I am writing this post about my favorites…so obviously it’s biased. Anyways, this song is a classic. The piano, Elton John’s voice, the sweetest of lyrics. I told the groom that I loved this song when he and I had a moment later that night and he got really excited because he picked it because it meant so much to him and her!

4. Die a Happy Man, Thomas Rhett

Oh, if all I got is your hand in my hand
Baby, I could die a happy man

I barely knew this song before I saw it as a first dance song. I think it was the first dance that made the song grow on me. It’s so sweet, it’s a great easy song to dance to, Thomas Rhett’s voice makes all the girls swoon. The words are so sweet and I don’t know what bride would want her groom to pick a song that basically says she’s all he needs. Adorable.

5. I Was Made for Loving You, Tori Kelly & Ed Sheeran

Hold me close through the night
Don’t let me go, we’ll be alright
Touch my soul and hold it tight
I’ve been waiting all my life

I went to see Tori Kelly totally randomly, not knowing this song at all, back in April. I became a little obsessed with this song (and all of her music – her voice is possibly one of the best I’ve heard live and I’ve seen a lot of live music). THEN in June, I photographed a wedding and this was the couples first dance song! I talked to them about their choice afterwards and THEY WERE AT THE CONCERT TOO! Small worlds are fun.
